Living in urban areas, the environment might feel like places that is far from us, when in reality, it is much closer. Places like our own backyard, the drain or the taman that our parents used to walk us to in our childhood years is our first point of entry into nature and where we could benefit most from experiential learning. The environment around us tend to be overlook and might seem mundane, but we believe that you can rediscover the novelty of places where you live by really looking at what’s around you #sekitarkita

Sekitar Kita Enterprise is registered under the Companies Commission of Malaysia.

“As a Living Lab initiative, we dream of transforming the campus environment into an ‘open classroom’ where researchers and students can conduct exciting field study and the public can benefit from our environmental education programme.”

Our origin

Sekitar Kita is a university-linked social enterprise as a spin-off from Water Warriors. We began our journey back in 2013 as volunteers and helped to grow Water Warriors as a Living Lab project in Universiti Malayaby providing ideas and solution for campus sustainability, especially on water bodies conservation and water consumption reduction. Some of notable work includes Varsity Lake revival, the revitalization of Sungai Mustafa and UM Green Belt wetland and many others.

What we can offer

Environmental education

Our niche area is water-related education, but we also love to learn, experiment and share more about other topics related to biodiversity, waste management and others.

Citizen science

We design place-based citizen science approaches and organise programs which allows community to contribute in scientific work while understanding environmental problems that matter in each place.

Interpretation & communication

We develop toolkits, guide books, interpretive signage, posters and others to make learning about the environment around us easy, relevant, fun and purposeful.

Research & innovation

We are interested in action-oriented research grounded in particular places and participatory to help build knowledge  on what we’ve learned and solve real-world problems.
